Creating an item with custom texture

Is there any way to create a new item with a custom texture?

 

You may change the texture and function of an existing item, but you can't add new ones (a limitation in Minecraft's system).

I'm pretty sure that can only override IDs that already exist in the game, but nothing stops you from trying it anyways.

 

As far as I know you can create custom items with custom IDs, Names and functionality; But for now custom textures are not supported.
